DMOZ - The Open Directory Project - Probably one of the largest and -at one time- most useful web directories on the Internet. It is human edited by a large group of volunteers all over the world. Listings in the DMOZ have become nearly impossible to obtain due to the sheer volume of cheating editors.

The listings at DMOZ are freely distributed, meaning web site owners can download DMOZ feeds and create their own directory (as long as credit to DMOZ remains). The Google directory is one of the better known users of DMOZ.

Although it is hosted and looked after by Netscape Communication Corporation the Open Directory Project remains and intends to stay free. It is free to submit your site to the directory and it is free to download and distribute the data.

DMOZ (Directory Mozilla) or the ODP (Open Directory Project) is used by some of the more popular portals and search engines around, so by getting a listing at DMOZ you will also be getting a listing at hundreds of other web sites using the data (they have to manually download and update their site with the new data before your listing appears). Some of the web sites using the data include Google Directory, Alexa, Pandia, and MyWay.

Users are encouraged to become editors and contibute to the directory. There are strict editorial guidelines and, unfortunately, the cheating editors have overrun the directory to the point that it is no longer possible to "get in" unless you know a cheater or the approving editor does not feel threatened by you.

Once accepted, you can freely add sites in your selected category.

DMOZ is one of the more important places to get your site listed on the web. The directory listings are generally respected by users and industry experts. Search engines regularly spider the sites listed so if your site is just new it will be found easily. If PageRank is important to you, then depending on the category of your site it will receive PR benefits from the listing. And of course there will be traffic from the directory and the hundreds of other sites that use the DMOZ data.
