Review - Listing of popular Web Directories
Review
and details of the Yahoo Directory.
The large general web directories are
a selection of directories containing
thousands of listings. Theyre often edited
by teams of reviewers and have been around
for more than a few years. Details of
their value and more information on each
directory is included.
Yahoo
Directory - Yahoo is one of the
most popular web sites on the Internet so
their directory has to be considered when
you are trying to get your site seen. It
can be quite a challenge to be listed though
unless you can afford the express listing
fee of $300USD (299 actually). Professional
or Business listing must pay an annual fee
of $300 but other noncommercial listings
only pay it once (unless you're one of the
chosen few that get listed FREE!)
The Yahoo directory is quite commercialized,
making it difficult for hobbyist web sites
and sites of no commercial value to be listed.
The hefty $300 listing fee rules a listing
out for many sites as its just too much
money. That doesn't mean you should not
submit your site though, especially if it
is non commercial in nature. To find out
if your site is considered commercial, search
for the category of your site and click
on "suggest a site". If you are
given the option of an express or free listing
there is a good chance your site can be
listed for free (don't hold your breath
waiting for your site to be listed for free
though!). There are also sponsored listings
and a few other ways to spend more money
if you have the budget for it.
The titles and descriptions in the Yahoo!
directory are very controlled. The editors
are Yahoo staff and they have to follow
a particular set of rules, so don't expect
to get your keywords stuffed into your title.
Same with the description, no radical sales
pitches. That's a good thing for the integrity
of a directory though and it's a good thing
for users of the directory. Not much good
for an SEO aggressively seeking to rank
higher for a particular set of keywords
though.
In deciding whether or not to pay the $300
you really have to consider your budget
and the purpose of your site. The best way
to work out if the Yahoo directory is for
you is to give it a go. If your site is
commercial in nature and the traffic you
are getting from Yahoo! each year pays for
the listing than obviously Yahoo! is for
you. If you have a small advertising budget
(or none) and you have the free listing
option available in your category, than
try your luck anyway. Who knows, you may
just get listed for free. There are people
for and against a paid listing at Yahoo!
but you really wont know until you try.
